In 2007, we anticipate several major decisions
on leasing and development of public lands – a final decision
on drilling coalbed methane wells in the HD Mountains and leasing
decisions in management plans for 2.7-million acres of public lands
including Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, the entire
San Juan National Forest, and the Dolores River Basin.
On private lands, a more favorable state and local political environment
should help advance our goals of securing policy changes with strengthened
state and local regulations governing oil and gas development that
mitigate the impacts to private landowners. We have additional
goals of reducing air and water pollution from oil and gas development,
engaging new constituencies, and promoting cleaner alternatives
to fossil fuel extraction.

Fight
the relentless increase in numbers and density of natural gas
wells in the San Juans;
- Support La Plata and Archuleta Counties in their struggles to assert basic local controls over natural gas development, and to protect citizens with common-sense rules.
