Lizard Head Wilderness

The existing Lizard Head Wilderness contains 41,496 acres of Colorado's most dramatic alpine landscapes. Three 14,000-foot peaks thrust craggily into the sky, surrounding the deep alpine cirque which holds Navajo Lake. Lizard Head is one of the westernmost extensions of the San Juan Mountains; graceful aspen forests and meadows blanket the wilderness's lower slopes. The wilderness serves as the headwaters of both the Dolores and San Miguel Rivers. Lizard Head's spruce-fir forests fall mostly into the old-growth category. Consequently, the wilderness also functions as a key western anchor in a reserve system spanning the entire length of the San Juan Mountains.
